Gabby McBriarty’s (’11) passion for Business Management led her to establish her own South Australian Aged Care Business

This month, LOSA has asked Gabby McBriarty (’11) to share with us her professional career journey within the aged care industry and how her interest within this industry combined with her passion for business management led her to establish her own business in 2018; My Care Solution. Gabby’s story highlights her incredible career achievements to date and how her Loreto education provided her with the foundation to follow her passion and achieve outstanding successes.

Gabby in her own words:

“I graduated from Loreto College in 2011 and went on to study a Bachelor of Management (Marketing) at the University of South Australia.

I was drawn to a career in business management because of my family’s own business in the aged care industry. Throughout my years as a Loreto College student, my parents owned and operated a non-medical senior home care franchise in South Australia – a business that I had grown up around. I had a front row seat to the evolution of the aged care industry here in our state and I was acutely aware of the career opportunities the aged care industry had to offer.

My interest in business management was nurtured by the business and economics subjects offered by Loreto College in my senior years. I fondly remember these subjects being taught in engaging and interactive ways, from mock job interviews through to intensive business case studies and placements, all of which gave me the foundations I needed to pursue undergraduate studies in the field.

After completing my degree, I commenced a full-time marketing role within my parents’ business and later secured a marketing role with the national franchise office. As my career progressed, the statistics regarding older people in Australia became more alarming. Over 1,000 Australians were turning 80 every week, with 1 in 4 being diagnosed with dementia. The most eye-opening statistic was that 92 per cent of older Australians wanted to remain at home for as long as possible.

While my parents’ non-medical senior care business certainly had its place within the community, I believed we had the skills and knowledge to develop a premium business that could assist any older person to remain in their own home, regardless of the complexity of their care needs.

In 2018, I established My Care Solution in partnership with my Mum, an experienced palliative care nurse. Our unique model of home care includes dedicated care management for every client and 24-hour access to a comprehensive range of in-home care and nursing services. Services range from basic non-medical support such as personal care, housekeeping and assisted transport, all the way through to complex nursing care and 24-hour care in the home.

Today, we have 3 office locations, directly employ over 150 people across Adelaide and Victor Harbor and deliver around 250 hours of care every day. We have been approved by the Australian Government to deliver care under the Home Care Packages program, but we also deliver care to clients on a private fee-for-service basis. We are also now joined by my Dad and younger brother, Ethan, making My Care Solution a true family business.

This year, I was elected to the South Australia Leading Age Services Australia “Next Gen” Council which aims to engage young professionals across the state to see the age services industry as a dynamic, innovative and life changing career opportunity. I have also enrolled in the Master of Clinical Nursing course at the University of Adelaide to ensure a smooth transition of leadership upon my parents’ retirement.

Having a supportive and hard-working family has afforded me many opportunities and benefits in my career – many of which I recognise I would not have been able to accomplish on my own. My parents’ encouragement and trust are my biggest motivators in everything I do at My Care Solution. Lastly, I am thankful for my 13 years at Loreto College. The education provided by the school is truly extraordinary, and the friendships I formed along the way will last a lifetime.
